La Rochelle - Île de Ré
La Couarde is located in the centre of Ré
island. The two main roads meet in the village
and become a single road to the Martray isthmus.
This commune marks the transition between two
environments: the cultivated fields prevail in the south,
while the north is made of salt marshes. The village
centre is a maze of narrow alleys. In the square near the
graveyard, visitors can admire a memorial in the shape
of an eagle pierced by a sword, which was inaugurated
in 1922. On the northern shore, the small Groisil harbour
leads to the bay of Loix.
