La Rochelle - Île de Ré
Sainte-Marie is situated on the southern shore
of Ré island, opposite Oléron island. Its coast,
made of beaches and small cliffs, extends from the Pointe
de Chauveau to the Grenettes beach, a popular surfing
spot. The town is built around a 12
th
century church
and includes the village of La Noue, whose inhabitants
are called Nouais. The centres of both villages are
both several hundred metres away from the sea.
The commune is currently experiencing a strong real
estate and demographic growth; it is the island’s most
populated commune.
