La Flotte is located on the northern shore of the
island. It belongs to the restricted circle of the
“Most Beautiful Villages in France”. Its coastline is made
up of small cliffs. Nowadays it is the largest commune in
Ré island and the second most populated (after Sainte-
Marie-de-Ré). Its centre is a labyrinth of narrow streets
and small places. Outside the town, visitors can admire
the impressive ruines of the Notre Dame des Châteliers
abbey, which was bombed by the English and looted by
Protestants during the wars of religion, and the Fort de
La Prée, one of the oldest military buildings on the island,
built in 1625 to defend the island.
