Situated on the northern shore of the eastern
half of the island, Saint-Martin is built around a
citadel which is a part of the Fortifications of Vauban, a
series of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The commune
payed a high price for its status of “capital of Ré island
.
It bears the scars of the numerous historical battles that
happened on the island. Its harbour, the economical
heart of the town, is the biggest in the entire Ré island.
As in most communes in the island, the main activity
is tourism. Nautical activities are especially important
because of the size of the harbour.
