La Rochelle - Île de Ré
The village is situated on the northern shore
of the western part of the island; it is the
furthermost commune of Ré, the most distant from the
bridge. The surroundings are made up of some of the
most beautiful sand beaches in the island, which face the
coast of Vendée. The local scenery is characterised by
big dunes and the forests of Lizay and Trousse-Chemise.
The Lilleau des Niges nature reservation is run by the
Bird Protection League; it is home to 250 species and
can be visited on foot or on a bicycle. Les Portes-en-Ré
attracted famous people such as the singer Charles
Aznavour and Jean Monnet, the “father of Europe”, who
spent summer vacations there.
