Clément is located on the southern shore of
the westernmost part of Ré island. Its current
territory overlaps the former islands of Portes and
Ars. Because it was created from five hamlets which
were part of Ars, its inhabitants are called Villageois
(“Villagers”) so as to offend nobody. In Saint-Clément
are found the Baleines Tower and the Baleines
Lighthouse. The latter gives a spectacular view of the
entire island after the visitor climbed the 257 steps of the
spiral staircase. The commune is surrounded by beautiful
beaches scattered with Atlantic Wall bunkers. Many
cetaceans became stranded on the shore after being
trapped by strong currents.
