The village of Ars belongs to the association
“The Most Beautiful Villages in France” and
enjoys a unique environment. It is situated in the middle
of salt marshes, in a little bay named after it, Fier d’Ars.
It is connected to the east to the rest of the island by
the narrow Martray isthmus. The commune is focused
on the bay and turns its back to the ocean. The village
center, in which narrow streets form a peculiar maze, is
built in concentric circles around a romanesque church,
which is one of the oldest religious buildings in the island.
Bicycles lanes cross the salt marshes of Ars-en-Ré, which
is considered the capital of white gold (salt).
