Rivages magazine édition La Rochelle - Ile de Ré N°1 - page 48

Loix is the smallest village in Ré island. It is
situated on the northern shore, in the middle
of marshes whose history can be discovered in the
ecomuseum of salt marshes. Located on a peninsula,
the commune looks like an “island in the island”. The
village offers many walking opportunities, from the
Fort Groin to the small harbour of Loix through the
marshes. Furthermore, two bicycles paths cross Loix: one
to the shore, the other to the swamps. Near the tide
mill, walkers can enjoy a unique view over a moonlike
scenery. Salt production used to play an important role
in the economy of Loix. It almost disappeared during the
last century, but today salt producers are coming back.
